Counselling, to be effective, has to be flexible, multi-modal, and creative
Jim Byrne and Renata Taylor-Byrne
26th January 2021
There are more than 400 different schools of thought in counselling and psychotherapy. And the world has moved on beyond CBT and Rational Therapy (REBT). Recent innovations, driven by neuroscience and attachment theory, include Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) and Affect Regulation therapy (developed by Dr Allan Schore).
We also know that a well fed and well rested individual will have greater emotional intelligence than a person who eats junk food, lives in a stressed environment, and gets inadequate sleep.
All systems of counselling and psychotherapy must now take the body-brain-mind of the client into account. And our system of counselling is the most comprehensive system so far developed.
About Dr Jim Byrne, Doctor of Counselling
Background information, education, etc.
Updated on 19th November 2020
I have a doctoral degree in counselling (DCoun) from the University of Manchester, UK (2002-2009). A master’s degree in education (MA(Ed)) from the Open University, UK (1991-1994). And a diploma in counselling psychology and psychotherapy (DipCPPsych-Rus) from Rusland College, Bath, UK (2001-2003).
I am an accredited Fellow of the International Society of Professional Counsellors; and a member of Counselling (CCC-Reg).
(I also have two certificates in Rational Emotive and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (RE&CBT), from the Albert Ellis Institute, NYC, with the University of Birmingham (November 2005); and the old Institute for REBT, in Bristol, UK (November 1999) – though I no longer practice anything like CBT/REBT.)
Instead, I practice an emotive-cognitive-narrative system of counselling which integrates the best and most useful elements of the fifteen or so systems I have studied, including minor fragments of CBT; combined with lots of Attachment theory, Affect regulation theory, Object relations theory, Personality Adaptations theory, Person-centered counselling, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt therapy, and many others. (My system is called Emotive-Cognitive Embodied Narrative Therapy, or E-CENT counselling for short. What is E-CENT counselling?***) E-CENT counselling also incorporates insights into the body-brain-mind link (including the importance of diet, exercise, sleep, relaxation, and so on). So we deal with the whole client, and not just with their ‘mind’.
About Renata Taylor-Byrne – Lifestyle Coach/Counsellor
Hello, and welcome to this page about my background experience and qualifications. My name is Renata Taylor-Byrne, and I am a qualified and accredited coach/counsellor.
My main specialism is Lifestyle Coaching, whereby I help individuals to clarify the goals they have in life, how they can best achieve them, and check that their lifestyle habits are supporting them in creating a great life for themselves.
Together we look at any areas or parts of someone’s life, which may not be working. We look at their most important well-being protectors: their nutrition, amount of sleep each night, sleep hygiene, how they manage their stress. Plus the support and security they have in their personal and work relationships, and their self-confidence. We clarify the client’s personal and professional goal-setting.
I also offer some specific sub-divisions of lifestyle coaching, including:
- Sleep coaching for people with problems like insomnia or sleep disruption…
- Health coaching, for people who need help with diet/nutrition, physical exercise, and tension/ relaxation…
- Stress management coaching and counselling, to get your work/life balance corrected, and to reduce your blood pressure and tendencies towards anxiety and anger…
For the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic, I will be offering Telephone Counselling/ Coaching, plus Email Counselling/Coaching, but not face-to-face services; unless you have a Covid-secure meeting room in Hebden Bridge.
