Personal transformation through holistic counselling and therapy – in Hebden Bridge, near Halifax, West Yorkshire

With Dr Jim Byrne, Doctor of Counselling

~~~
What will 2019 be like for you?  This could be the year you finally turn your life around!
counselling-for-personal-transformationDo you believe in the possibility of personal transformation?  The idea that you could become a different person from the person you are today?  That you could have a transformed life?
The idea that you could become happier; healthier; more loving and more loved, in all your significant relationships?
Do you believe you could achieve more personal success in the world, at home, at work, and in all your relationships?
If your answer to all those questions is ‘No!’, then, without any crystal ball, I can predict (with about 90% certainty!) that your life will continue to be no better than it is today.
How can I be so sure?
Because, your childhood and early life experiences ‘wired up’ your brain – as a creature of habit – to think, feel and do the kinds of things that give you the life you have today!
And because nobody is coming on a white charger, in a suit of shining armour, to rescue you.  And the gods will not realise that they have been neglecting you, and suddenly change what ‘they’ give you.  And wishing and wanting and hoping does not change anything in the real world!
Of course, the external environment today also plays a part in the shape of your life.  And many parts of that environment are beyond your control.  But you can exert some control over your habit-based thoughts, feelings and actions – especially if you get some help from me!
counselling-new-year-resolutionsIt might be that you decided to set up some New Year Resolutions (or goals for the coming year) for 2016.  And it may well be that by this point (14th December 2016) you realise that personal change, on your own, without the support of a coach/counsellor/therapist, is just too difficult!  Why do I say this?  Because new habits are difficult to form – especially new, good habits.  And old habits are difficult to break, especially old, bad habits!
Having said all that, I must emphasise that I sincerely believe in the possibility of personal transformation, because I have transformed my own life in various ways, several times over the years.  It is not effortless; but is is definitely possible; and I can show you how!
I can help you to set ONE, ACHIEVABLE New Year Resolution for 2017, and to stick to it, because I understand effective behaviour change, and how to build new habits!  If you try to change too many things at once, it’s just too daunting, and you will fall (and fail) under the load!
(Once you have achieved your first habit change, you can then move on to work on the second, and third and so on.  But slowly, one at a time.  “Inch by inch, it’s a cinch!”  and yard by yard, is just too hard!)
So, whatever your New Year Goals are, I can help.  You might want:
goals-for-personal-change– to lose weight;
– to get fit;
– to develop a healthier lifestyle;
– to reduce the unpleasant feelings of stress in your body-mind;
– to give up alcohol abuse or drug abuse;
– to get out of an unworkable relationship;
– to rebuild a damaged relationship;
– to learn how to be more successful in building relationships;
– to establish a loving relationship with somebody who cares about your happiness;
– to change jobs; or change careers;
– to clean up some trauma from your childhood or early life;
– to get control of your anxiety, anger or depression;
– to feel more self-confident;
– to feel more secure in an intimate relationship.
drjim-counsellor9Come and see me, and let me help you to achieve the kinds of personal transformation you desire in 2017! One goal at a time.  One habit at a time.  One difficulty at a time.
Counselling is about personal change.  Buddhism and Taoism teach us that change is the law of life.  And yet, because we are creatures of habit, we cling to the known and resist the unknown!  “The natural resistance that we seem to have to change sometimes surprises or angers others, particularly those who are trying to change for the better.  We need to understand this resistance because the whole point of counselling is to make changes.  You might want to make dramatic changes – for instance to change your whole lifestyle, end a relationship or move into a new career.  On the other hand, the changes you want could be more subtle – perhaps changing your perception of a situation or becoming more comfortable with your emotional responses.  Whether the changes are big or small, understanding how you might unconsciously hinder them will help you ensure that resistance is no impediment to your success”.
About my typical client:
You need help, because you are struggling with bad feelings, or a sense of unhappiness.  You need help because you do not know how to solve a big problem in your life.
You come to see me for a few sessions, and suddenly your life looks a whole lot better.  Why?
(1) Because of the quality of the relationship I offered to you, which reflected you more accurately than you had previously been reflected by the key individuals in your life. (And we humans are created in relationship!)
(2) Because of the quality of the information that I taught to you, which is based on years of research and professional experience as a problem solver, a healer, a teacher of people just like you.
(3) Because you learned from me what you needed to change, and how to change it.
Unsolicited client testimonial 2:
♣ “Dear Jim, Thanks for all your help with my anxiety problem, my general health concerns, and the other issues we discussed.  I am feeling a lot better now, and, thanks to your input, I now know how to fix the problem.  The quality of your listening was great, and very helpful – but it was exceeded by the quality of your care for me! I got a lot off my chest, and you helped to clarify a lot of things for me. In the process, I grew a lot, and took more responsibility for solving my own problems.”
Video Introduction
Here’s a recent video clip which will give you some indications of what you can expect from consulting me with your problems of daily living.  It titled:
Exploring possible futures for yourself
And this is how it is introduced:
Epictetus, influenced by Aristotle, engaged in black and white thinking about what we can and cannot control.  Most humans give up trying to control their environments too quickly and easily.  Of course, it is distressing to keep trying to control something that is truly beyond your control, but it is a waste of your life’s possibilities to fail to persist with your vision in the face of (potentially controllable) resistance by circumstances.
My services
I offer general counselling help with emotional, behavioural and relationship difficulties; and also in seven areas of specialism***.
I provide a unique form of ‘talk & action therapy’, or cognitive counselling (including elements of CBT), which combines the best systems of effective thinking, re-deciding, re-parenting, psychological education, social skills training, and emotional support: plus lifestyle coaching (including the importance of diet/nutrition, exercise, sleep, relaxation, etc).  This system is called Emotive-Cognitive Embodied-Narrative Therapy, or E-CENT counselling.  (E-CENT counselling integrates REBT/CBT with Transactional Analysis [TA], Attachment theory, psychodynamic approaches, Zen Buddhist philosophy, Moral philosophy and various Narrative therapy approaches; plus an awareness of the importance of the body-mind-environment links).  My clients quickly learn to come to terms with reality, to manage their body-mind:  including their thoughts, feelings and behaviours – and to work intelligently towards their goals.
~~~

Here’s a little video introduction to the system of counselling that I use, which is called Emotive-Cognitive Embodied-Narrative Therapy (E-CENT)

Counselling and psychotherapy quotation No.1:

Counsellors need to appreciate that counselling clients are shaped by their social experience, and that they see with socially shaped and tinted lenses: “Sociocultural influences, including family of origin, social class, significant relationships, and wider sub-groups inform people’s sense of what constitutes normality and how life should be lived.  Correspondingly, self-stories embody socially and culturally derived assumptions, values and beliefs, which form lenses through which people perceive and give meaning to their lives”.

Martin Payne (2007), Narrative Therapy, in Dryden’s Handbook of Individual Therapy, page 404. (22d)

~~~
What is the structure of a counselling session?
A standard session is a 45 minute conversation, which is confidential between us. (I would never breach my pledge of confidentiality, unless a client told me they planned to commit a serious crime; or I judged that serious harm could be done to a third party; or I was instructed to make a statement by a court of law); and that has only happened once [in a court case] in more than seventeen years of doing this work). During our sessions, through a process of discussion, debate and direct teaching/training, I use Emotive-Cognitive Embodied-Narrative Therapy (E-CENT) to help my clients to feel better; to act better; to think better; and to function better in their home and work relationships and performances.  Mainly I do that by teaching them how to change their own attitudes of mind; to learn how to ‘reframe’ their problems so they do not show up as less stressful and more manageable; and to complete their experience of undigested material from their past history.
~~~

And here’s a little video clip which outlines some of the benefits that you will gain from E-CENT counselling:

What will you get?

If you come to see me, I will help you to get rid of your unpleasant, distressing emotional pain, and your unhelpful behaviours.

I will do this partly by teaching you how to reframe your problems – to look at them and think about them differently – so that they look and feel more manageable, easier to solve; and less distressing or difficult.

I will introduce you to new ways of thinking/feeling about your unresolved problems in life; and I will help you to feel better about who you are how you behave and perform in the world.

If you enter into E-CENT counselling with me, you can expect to learn how to think better; feel better and perform and behave better, at home and at work.

If you are angry, anxious or depressed, you can expect to reduce the intensity of those emotions to a more reasonable level; which will improve how you think and feel; how you act; and the general quality of your life.  Happiness can return to your life.

If you are struggling with conflict or disturbances in your relationships, you can expect to learn how to manage effective relationships for productive outcomes.

If you are struggling with practical problems in your life, you can expect to gain the skills to plan and implement your goals more effectively.

I can also help you to clean up an emotionally unhealthy childhood history, in terms of attachment style or personality adaptation.

Counselling and psychotherapy quotation No.2

Counselling Goals – 2: Managing problem situations: “Clients may want help dealing with specific situations that are problematic for them.  In addition, counselling may best proceed if a specific situation within a larger problem is addressed rather than trying to deal with the whole problem.  (For example) With a shy college student client, rather than focus on the broader problem of shyness, the counsellor and client might concentrate on a particular shyness situation of importance to the client, such as asking or being asked by a particular person for a date”.
