Book Descriptions

Lifestyle Counselling and Coaching for the Whole Person:

Or how to integrate nutritional insights, physical exercise and sleep coaching into talk therapy

Copyright (c) Dr Jim Byrne, with Renata Taylor-Byrne, 2018

Cover, full, revised 7- Feb 13 2018

In the pages of this book, you will find a detailed introduction to the theory and practice of one of the most recent, and most comprehensive forms of holistic counselling and psychotherapy.

This new system (for helping people to optimize their positive experiences of life, and to process their negative experiences), necessarily deals with emotions, thinking, stories and narratives, plus bodily states; and thus is called Emotive-Cognitive Embodied Narrative Therapy (E-CENT).

And the bodily states of the client are assumed to include the effects of what they eat and drink – and don’t eat or drink – their level of regular physical exercise, and the quality of their regular sleep patterns.

But these authors do not wish to proselytize for this system.  They would be happy to have individual counsellors and therapists, from all the schools of counselling and therapy, experimenting with adding some small elements of their innovations into their own, idiosyncratic systems for helping their own clients.

This book has been designed to be helpful for three audiences:

(1) Counsellors, psychotherapists, coaches, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, educators and others;

(2) Students of counselling, psychotherapy, psychology, psychiatry, social work and related disciplines; and:

(3) Self-help and personal development enthusiasts.

The content of this book has been a long time incubating, at the very least since 2001 when I first tried to defend the ABC model of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) by relating it to the three core components of Freud’s model of the mind (or psyche):

… In Chapter 4, Renata Taylor-Byrne and Dr Jim Byrne present brief but compelling evidence, from reliable sources, that

(1) dietary changes and physical exercise can produce dramatic reductions in levels of anger, anxiety and depression;

(2) anti-depressants are not nearly as effective as has been claimed (and that physical exercise alone is as effective at curing depression as are antidepressant drugs; and the exercise outperforms the drugs in the longer term);

(3) that drug companies hide negative trial results;

(4) that the real pills often fail to outperform placebo (sugar) pills;

(5) that the real pills are often totally ineffective;

(6) that they seem to be addictive, and difficult to get off in some cases; and

(7) they have serious side effects (in some cases involving suicidal ideation).

And in addition, the authors agree with those theorists who have argued that physical exercise is at least as effective as anti-depressants; and also that some forms of dietary change can and do reduce and/or eliminate depression, and also reduce anxiety and anger.

Counselling and therapy systems have normally ignored the convincing evidence that exercise and diet can change our emotional states.  But that tendency is changing, and there is a huge and growing demand for the ideas contained in this book.

The E-CENT Narrative Therapy Series – Volume 1

How to Write a New Life for Yourself:

Narrative therapy and the writing solution

By Jim Byrne (with Renata Taylor-Byrne)

Draft cover jimnearfinal (2)

Author’s introduction: In this book, I provide you with a road-map which will support you in building a bridge into a better future for yourself.

I have used a more gradual approach than Julia Cameron.  I want to help you to begin with small steps; in an easy, simple way; and to slowly build up your ‘writing muscles’.

In the process, you will develop a great capacity to manage your thinking-feeling-perceiving more reasonably; in a more self-regulated fashion.  You will become more intuitive; more creative; and a more efficient and effective problem-solver.  You will be less troubled by stress and strain, and more likely to succeed in achieving whatever goals you want to pursue!

Good luck with your exciting journey!

Top Secrets for

Building a Successful Relationship

 Volume 1 – A blueprint and toolbox for couples and counsellors: C101

To do that – to get in touch with our feelings of love – we have to understand love and relationship at least as well as we understand how to do our work, how to drive, or how to practice our hobbies or recreational activities.

According to a well-known Rolling Stones song: “We all need someone to lean on…”.  However, if you over-rely upon your partner, and lean on them too much, you will become vulnerable to falling over if they step back.  So you need to have some degree of autonomy from your partner, as well as feeling you can rely upon them when you need their support.

We are essentially social, connected and related beings, and not completely separate individuals.

How to control your anger, anxiety and depression, using nutrition and physical activity

by Renata Taylor-Byrne and Jim Byrne.  Copyright (c) 2017, Renata Taylor-Byrne and Jim Byrne

Front cover, 8Our (2017) book – about how to control your anger, anxiety and depression, using nutrition and physical exercise – is available at various Amazon outlets. (See the links below.

Before the book even appeared at Amazon, more than 250 counsellors, therapists and others indicated a high level of interest in this book, with many requesting to be informed when the book becomes available.  And as soon as they were informed, the sales began to occur, quite rapidly! This is a clear measure of how badly needed this resource is, by professionals who know their clients are bodies as well as minds; and by individuals who know they need to do something radically different – like taking control and responsibility – in order to ensure their own emotional wellbeing, by managing their lifestyle.

The book provides some clear guidelines regarding those foods which need to be excluded from your diet, in order to be healthy and emotionally well.  It also contains lots of stimulating ideas to help you to produce your own ‘personalised diet’ and exercise plan. And we have expanded Part 6 to provide a comprehensive guide to how to change any habit, so that readers can actually make the kinds of changes to diet and exercise approaches that appeal to them.

If you’re one of those individuals who has been waiting for the book to arrive, then you can get the paperback here, for less than £10.00 GBP!

And if you are looking for a present for a counsellor, coach, psychotherapist, social worker, health worker, or self-help enthusiast, then this could be a good solution for your gift need:  Amazon India

The life of Daniel O’Beeve: In three volumes

Daniel O’Beeve and the Wee History of His Part of Old Ireland

 Book 1 of 3

A semi-autobiographical romp through a bit of the universe

By Jim Byrne

Published by The CreateSpace Platform, in association with the Institute for E-CENT Publications: Hebden Bridge. 2018

Description of this book:

Front cover 1This book is primarily about Daniel O’Beeve; a little Earthling of no particular consequence.  But his journey is psychologically illuminating.

However, the first thing I have to do is to introduce somebody other than Daniel O’Beeve.  This might seem odd, but everything about me and my life is decidedly odd – and Daniel’s is even odder.  And the character I must introduce is a little, blue alien…

For more, see below.

Contextual clue from Daniel O’Beeve

‘It took a long time to construct a new language – a personal language – and a language of the heart (in order to make sense of my life, and to write this story).  I got lots of insights into “language construction” from novels, by authors like Joseph Heller, Ursula Le Guin, Graham Green, Ken Kesey, Kurt Vonnegut, and many, many more.  One thing I learned from Ursula Le Guin was this:

“The (graphic) artist deals in what cannot be said in words. The artist whose medium is fiction does this in words. The novelist says in words what cannot be said in words.”

‘I learned more sociology and social psychology from Ursula Le Guin’s “science fiction” than I ever did from my academic studies’.

‘And in this book, I use a thousand interacting word-mirrors to capture the light of truth, in a network of reflections and shadows’.

Teaching the client about the nature of love is one of the most difficult challenges a counsellor faces:  “There are no short-cuts to understanding what love is.  If someone has been deprived of the crudest infantile experience of love then he might be permanently crippled or, at least, have great difficulty in learning later what the word can mean.  In learning what it symbolizes, I need to re-write my autobiography over and over again.  To grow is to re-organize the past now and to move into the future”.

Chill Out, coverChill Out: How to Control Your Stress Level, and to have a happier life, by Dr Jim Byrne

Third revised and expanded edition: 2012.  The purpose of this book is to teach the reader what stress is, and how to combat it. It contains eighteen techniques for reducing physical and mental strain, and to enhance environmental control.  It is written in the form of a self-help manual, with spaces for self-reflection exercises. However, it could also be used by counsellors, counselling students, and interested others, as a means to learn, understand and present the E-CENT approach to Stress Management in counselling, coaching and therapy contexts.  If you need to control your stress, or you want to help others to do so, then this book is exactly what you need to read.

The more you read and re-read this book, and the more you apply the techniques described here, the more your coping resources will increase, and the less will you be affected by the fixed stressors in your life.

It is advisable to end your engagement with this book by constructing an action plan, as described in Chapter 10.  If you want to maximize your chances of reducing your stress level, you should apply yourself diligently to implementing your own, personalized action plan.

“If you learn some of the techniques in this book, you will be able to enjoy life much more at home and at work, as you get your stress levels under control.  You will no longer need to lash out at those people who put pressure on you, or to give in to every demand that life throws at you.  You will begin to develop a sense of real mastery in your life.”

The psychodynamic approach to counselling emphasizes the way the past experiences of the client distort their present, through the operations of the non-conscious part of their mind:
  “People find themselves in relationships or in situations, even in relation to themselves, which are unproductive but somehow compulsive, leaving them in pain, (or) tense, (and) confused.  They simply can’t understand it.  And their failure in understanding has to do with the fact that the motivation behind (their relationships, actions and attitudes) is often unknown; they are (in fact) unconscious feelings, experiences, and intentions which were relegated to the unconscious because they were painful at the time (when they originally occurred).  They remain there, shut off from modification or reality-testing by later experience.

Unfit for Therapeutic Purposes: The case against RE&CBT

The book that reveals the fundamental falsehoods at the heart of REBT/CBT

Cover444Many of this author’s criticisms of REBT apply equally to all forms of CBT which utilise the ABC model of human disturbance.

Dr Byrne begins by showing that Dr Ellis was wrong on two major counts:

Firstly, Ellis’ claim that there is a difference in degree of disturb-ability of humans and other animals, and that the cause of that difference is the existence of language, and the capacity that provides to humans to think about their experiences, and to think about their thinking.  Dr Byrne presents scientific evidence to refute this line of reasoning by Dr Ellis.

And secondly, Ellis’s claim that he had evidence (in the form of a foundational case study) that people are upset by their thinking, plus their thinking about their thinking.  In a line by line analysis of the relevant text from Dr Ellis’ 1962 book, Dr Byrne destroys the basis of this false claim.

Byrne then explores the value and veracity of some of the core principles of Stoicism , which are built into REBT/CBT, and finds that they do not stand up to scrutiny!

There are at least seven key errors in the foundations of REBT, many of which overlap CBT practice.

These systems of therapy are enjoying a short-lived popularity which will end in tears.

If you are an REBT or CBT therapist, then you need to review the content of this book, to understand the errors at the heart of this system of extreme Stoical philosophising about human emotional and behavioural disturbances.

And if you are a student who is considering using some elements of REBT in your future counselling or therapy work, then you need to read this analysis.  You need to know that it is based on some serious errors which, it is not too strong a claim to state, are forms of madness!

It is madness to deny the impact of the social environment upon the body-brain-mind of the client.

It is madness to blame the client for their emotional disturbances.

And it is madness to copy the delusions of a first century Roman slave, instead of being informed by the research evidence of modern social psychology, neuroscience, and interpersonal neurobiology!

Get this book today, if you want to eliminate these errors from your own thinking and your own work.  Or you want to avoid learning them in the first place.  This book will also inform you of the importance of fairness and morality in counselling and therapy, and improve your capacity to think about the human body-brain-mind, and the true causation of emotional disturbances.
